Chapter 10

Kian

I fucking hate meetings like this. As we try to calm down the miserable client who's worked her way up through every single one of the ranks of the financial division of our company, I shoot glare after glare at the vice president under me. How he let her get this far is still beyond me.

"Ma'am," he says, twitching nervously, "as we discussed, unless you can present us with a death certificate or a police report, establishing the proper amount of time has passed since the beneficiary went missing, there's nothing we can do."

"Unacceptable," Mrs. Trench, declares. She turns to me. "Mr. Crown, I've bent over backward here. How long must this charade go on? My husband died. His estate belongs to me."

I grit my teeth and strive for professionalism. "The portions of it bequeathed to you have already been released. But the heir for the remainder is the daughter."

"Who's disappeared! She's been missing for years." She gestures wildly at her attorney. "Tell him."

Her attorney squirms.

I cut him off. "And when the documentation is available, we will happily fulfill your request."

"This is madness," she declares, standing dramatically. "I'm your client, and you need to make this right."

"Ma'am—" I clench my jaw.

"I'm going to sue all of you," she spits. "That's my money, I earned it—"

"You did no such thing," a shaking voice says from the door.

My gaze snaps up.

My mystery girl—my Ella—she's standing there looking pale as a ghost.

But for all that she's shaking, she's strong. Her curled fists and rigid spine prove that.

"You monster," Ella grates out. "You thieving, cruel, miserable—"

I rise to stand. "Ella."

Her bright blue gaze darts to meet mine.

And the betrayal I see there cuts me to the core.

Mrs. Trench starts shouting, but I dismiss her, taking a step toward the beautiful, trembling girl by the door.

But Ella puts up a hand. "She's your client?" she gasps.

I stop cold. What the hell is going on? "Do you know her?"

"I've never met this girl in my life," Mrs. Trench insists, and I know in a heartbeat that she's lying.

Ella laughs, and the sound is ice cold. "You wish you hadn't," she spits at Mrs. Trench. Then she looks to me. "And if you represent her, if she's your client, I— Part of me wishes I had never met you, either."

With that, she whips around and runs toward the elevator. Stunned, I watch her go for all of three seconds.

And then I'm off, racing after her.

Behind me, mass confusion erupts, but I don't care. I let Ella get away from me once. No way I'm ever going to do that again.

I catch up with her just as the elevator doors slide open. She steps inside and jabs at the button, tears streaming down her face. I wedge my arm into the closing doors just in time. I shove myself inside. The doors close after me, and Ella glares at them in utter betrayal.

As we begin to descend, I reach for her, but she backs away.

"I have nothing to say to you," she says.
